School of the Built Environment
Heriot-Watt University

The built environment is made up of all the buildings and infrastructure that surround us, making it possible to live and function as a modern advanced society. These national assets are extremely expensive to construct and maintain. The design and construction of all new buildings, and refurbishment of existing ones, demands effective financial management to ensure value for money for everyone involved. The Quantity Surveyor (QS) is the construction professional providing economic and cost advice on all aspects of the construction process. The QS has the financial, managerial and technical expertise in providing buildings which meet their client's requirements; are delivered on time; and within budget. In their day to day working life the modern QS works with clients, architects, engineers and contractors at every stage of the construction process, from initial concept design through to construction and completion, to ensure value for money objectives are met.
