The built environment is made up of all the buildings and infrastructure that surround us, making it possible to live and function as a modern advanced society. These national assets are extremely expensive to construct and maintain. The design and construction of all new buildings, and refurbishment of existing ones, demands effective financial management to ensure value for money for everyone involved. The Quantity Surveyor (QS) is the construction professional providing economic and cost advice on all aspects of the construction process. The QS has the financial, managerial and technical expertise in providing buildings which meet their client's requirements; are delivered on time; and within budget. In their day to day working life the modern QS works with clients, architects, engineers and contractors at every stage of the construction process, from initial concept design through to construction and completion, to ensure value for money objectives are met.
On graduating from this course you will:
be able to ensure that the resources of the construction industry are used to best advantage from project inception to demolition
understand how the interrelationship between economics, technology, management and law can be used to add value to the financial and procurement management of construction projects
have intellectual and research skills appropriate to professional work in these disciplines
have a range of transferable skills in information technology, communication and team working
be able to evaluate complex problems and formulate original ideas and proposals in the field of the built environment
This course provides students with an understanding of the demand in effective financial management to ensure value for money to everyone concerned in the construction process. The emphasis is on the contracts management and contracts administration. As a Quantity Surveyor you will provide
economic and cost advice on all aspects of
the construction processes. Furthermore, a
QS is equipped with financial, managerial and technical expertise which will meet clients' requirements; on time delivery of project; and within budget cost. In their day to day working life, a modern QS works with clients, architects, engineers and contractors at every stage of the construction process, from initial concept design through to construction and completion, to ensure value for money objectives are met.
The demand of QS is great and in fact in shortage. Armed with this prestiguous degree, one becomes more marketable in this booming construction industry.
Graduates with relevant
employment experience and who meet the
progression requirements may be considered
for further study at postgraduate level. All

Heriot-watt University.

for entry to full
membership.
